The Golden Rules

Rule #1 - Remember that names are for a lifetime. Most likely, your baby will have the name you choose for life. Try to make sure it’s a name that your child will take pride in and happily accept as an expression of self. It’s important that you both like the name. You may not have similar tastes, but you should try to settle on a name you both like. It can be easy to push your favourite name at the expense of your partner’s, but it’s not fair to do that.

Rule #2 - Choose a name with positive attributes. Your baby deserves a name that conveys positive and desirable values. Don’t choose a name that has negative connotations such as dullness or awkwardness. Instead, think of names that you associate with beauty, intelligence, affection, strength and independence. Some parents give their children sentimental names. Family names, inspiring names and historic names are all good choices. The name should mean something to you.

Rule #3 - How to spell your baby’s name. Certain names have a huge variety of spellings, and this is something to think carefully about when choosing your baby’s name. For example, just how are you supposed to spell Katherine? Catherine? Katharine? Cathryn? Kathryn? If there is one thing that unites Mumsnetters, it is that unusual or unconventional spellings of names are best avoided, if only to protect your child from other people's derision. On a practical level, unusual spellings for baby names can cause confusion and lots of frustration as, in later life, they are forced to spell out their name to the person on the other end of the phone for the umpteenth time.
